Early Reader | Pre-school Books by D.M. De Alwis

Best Friends by D.M. De Alwis

BEST FRIENDS features Maya, who is hesitant to attend school. In a classic playground move, her friend has told her she is not her BFF. The problem is, she doesn't know what a BFF is, but she is troubled by the rejection. Her mother points out that she has more than one friend with whom she can play.

We're all hooked by the negative. Kids (just like adults) feel rejection and cling to that feeling. The problem is that focusing on the rejection leads to missed opportunities staring you in the face.

This book is designed to be read aloud to preschoolers or by early readers. Read-along books on YouTube!

BEST FRIENDS was released on 26 February 2025 by Ahasae Tharu Publishing. [ISBN 978-1-0694018-1-6]

Which Feeling by D.M. De Alwis

WHICH FEELING features Theo, who has learned a new phrase at kindergarten. "You hurt my feelings." On their walk home, Theo's Amma tries to find out which of Theo's feelings she has hurt.

Children ask questions as they try to grasp new concepts. Often, parents lack the time or mental space to respond appropriately. This book serves as an icebreaker to help parents initiate those important conversations with their children.

This book is designed to be a fun read-aloud to preschoolers or by early readers. Read-along books on YouTube!

WHICH FEELING was released on 4 May 2023 by Ahasae Tharu Publishing. [ISBN 978-1-0694018-0-9]

Rohan Corlosquet began his career after encountering a draft of "Which Feeling" at the age of 8. Discovering the story was an exchange between him and his mother, he surprised her with his tenacity in creating ten full-colour illustrated panels. Two years later, they collaborated again on their second picture book. He is currently working on illustrations for the third book in the series titled Monster Under the Bed.

Warnarine Samahin (1942-2021) chronicled her experience growing up in Manning Town, Colombo, Sri Lanka, in the late 1950s. Her work was published posthumously by her son, Reza Samahin.

Incidentally, after accepting the project, we discovered D.M. De Alwis' mother had spent the early part of her childhood growing up in Manning Town.

Ahasae Tharu's commitment to DE&I

Canada is a diverse country. Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, where we are based, is even more so.

  • We are committed to using language and culture to normalize diversity within our books.
  • We do not discriminate when choosing who we work with—editors, illustrators, ARC & Beta readers, and sensitivity readers—on the basis of origin, or personal and religious preference.
  • See Acknowledgements page for a list of contributors.

Examples of our commitment to diversity are calling the mother 'Amma' while illustrating our every-day reality.

Ahasae Tharu's commitment to Sustainability

We hope to be able to fill this space in the near future with our intentions to give back to community.

Publishing our books through IngramSpark necessitates a destroy on return policy. We hope customers of our books will choose to instead pass-it-along or donate used books to charity.

For books sold on consignment: We commit to picking up unsold books and reusing them for in person sales or donation.
