A writer… writes?

On productivity, watching my cat chirp, and finding the muse.

A writer… writes?
Even the best writers find it hard and easy.

Writing Life

A writer… writes?

Publishing two medium posts in one day is a great accomplishment. But I don’t feel accomplished. Instead, I feel like I have failed.

Last week

The busy life of a mother means I’ve put off writing my novel for the whole weekend. Last week was reading week. In Ontario, Canada, that translates to kids being off for a week from school. My output last week was dismal. Maybe 500 words compared to 2,500 the week before.

Finally, a time to write.

The muse has vanished. I watched Sandman yesterday, the episode in which Calliope, a Greek muse, is held captive, and Rory (from Doctor Who), working under the name Richard, is punished by Morpheus. He’s punished for receiving too many ideas that he can't stick to one.

My punishment today is that I have one steady idea. I teased out how I could overcome an issue in storytelling during my ‘time off.’ I haven’t had the will to engage.

Captain Picard never fails.

The muse has fled. Inner turmoil pervades.

What to do? Walking away.

I’m going to step away from my computer after publishing this article. I am not even going to try.

Mindset

Believe it or not, you can’t perform when you’re busy criticizing yourself. Resetting expectations and intent is the way to go.

Focus on what you can control at the moment rather than beating your head against the wall in what you can not do.
